Concern expressed at libraries futures
Both Raetihi and Ohakune librarians are to finish work on 12 July. Raetihi librarian Margot Webb had originally had her notice in to finish work on 3 May but has been asked to stay on until 12 July when Colleen Newton, the Ohakune librarian finishes. A letter from the Waimarino Community Advice Service to the community board meeting on Thursday asked if the council was planning to appoint only one replacement librarian. The CAS felt such a move would be bad as it could not be done without drastically altering the hours of one or both libraries. If this happened it would not be of service to either community. With only one librarian it was felt the hours would be rigid and would
not be easily able to be changed. Meal breaks and travelling time between the two towns would need to be allowed for. Two librarians would allow for more flexibility to open extra hours if needed as has been done over the years especially in conjunction with schools for things like book week. Mention was made about the many hours voluntary work Mrs Webb has put in over the years at the Raetihi library and the service she provides for pensioners such as delivering books.t Both Mr Webb and Mrs Newton were thanked for their excellent service and good wishes were extended to them for their retirement. The community board is asking council to clairfy the situation.
