DOC wants old ski clothing
Whakapapa conservation officers need sec-ond-hand ski gear, mainly clothing. But it's not because of budget cuts - they are setting up a ski museum in the new Whakapapa Visitor Centre auditorium building. They have lots of equipment for the museum but very little in the way of clothing, even from the 1960s and '70s, said centre manager Russell Montgomery. Staff had hoped to have the museum open by the start of the ski season but the size of
the task has meant pushing the deadline into the middle of the ski season. The idea behind the museum is to take people through the ages of skiing on Turoa, Whakapapa and Tukino. Skiing plays a significant part in the history of the park, said Mr Montgomery and the museum would recognise that. Featured will be mannequins in period ski clothing from 1913 through to the present day, along with displays of photographs, equipment, and home movies converted to video.
