Train turntable to be resurected
If Ohakune's train turntable is restored more steam train visits would be possible because locomotives like the 26 metre, 145 tonne Ka945 could be turned without adding extra miles to its journey. This information has spurred the Preservation of Ohakune Railway Station (PORS) group to investigate the turntable at the junction rail yards. The group has successfully negotiated with railways to acquire the land on which the turntable is sited, plus the tracks leading from the main trunk line onto the turntable. They are also looking for a suitable cradle, and believe they have found one in Taranaki.
Rail enthusiasts Bob Norling and Graham Parker started work on uncovering the turntable pit last week. The pit has been completely filled in, with few surface signs of its existence. It is situated at the eastern end of the yards. Following discussions with Steam Incorporated after their recent Easter visit by the steam train Ka945, the local group heard that more steam train visits would be possible if there were a turntable at Ohakune. At present Wellington trains have to travel to Taumarunui to be tumed and Auckland trains to Palmerston North, affecting the viability of some trips. A local engineer is to excavate the pit, and an added bonus is expected Turnpage2
