Anti riding law upsets instructor

A bylaw controlling the movement of horses on council reserves and grass verges in urban areas is unfair to pony club riders. That view was expressed to the Waimarino Community Board at their mecting on 4 April. Ohakune resident and

riding iilstructor Evelyn Cooper wrote to the board to say such a bylaw i was unfair to the majority of riders who were responsible in their activities in the towns. She said it was often dangerous for children riders in Ohakune to ride on the road, especially in the

ski season, and that they had been encouraged to ride on the grass verges in some places, where appropriate. She said in such cases the children acted responsibly and took care not to cause damage to verges and in fact helped keep the grass down in sonie areas. She said the present problem with irresponsible riders in Raetihi could be dealt with under the present vandalism and/or unruly behaviour laws. Cr Ellen Gould agreed that there were times it would be dangerous for children to ride on the road^ She said the young riders had very few options. The board heard that there will be more discussion and time for submissions on the

proposed bylaw before it is implemented.
