Bill concern

• On behalf of all persons employed in the early childhood education sector of the Waiouru area, I write to express my concern for the proposed Employment/ Contracts bill. The bill is due to come before government on the 1 may, 1991 and through your paper , I wish to make readers aware of the unworkability of this bill, by highlighting the following points and probable outcomes; • Awards ensure both sides have their voices and opinions heard, ensuring a fair and just system. • Workers and employers do not all have the skills to negotiate individually. • Individual negotiations are expensive and time wasting. • Important equity questions like tangihanga leave and domestic leave will be overlooked in contract negotiations. Quality early childhood education depends on having continuity of and well trained staff. This is guaranteed by fair wages and conditions. We are very worried that early child care will deteriorate and ask the , public to support our campaign for quality early childhood education by writing to their local MP indicating opposition to the Employment Contracts bill, support of our right to have a union and by signing the petition for quality early education in their area.
