Weaner prices down
The number of weaners yarded at this year's Raetihi Weaner Sale was up on last year. Approximately 1,300 head were yarded for the sale on 4 April. While the standard of weaners was better than last year, reflecting the good growning season, prices were down by about $30 per head. The market was back on recent district weaner fairs with vendors disappointed with the market, believing that prices should have been similar to last year. Most vendors were prepared to meet the market with a virtual clearance of the yard. The main outside buying interest came from Wanganui and Marton, with interest from Auckland, annual purchasers of heifers at the sale. There were a lot of smaller lines sold. Twenty seven top simmental x weaner steers sold on account of J Journeaux made $475.
23 good charolais x weaner steers on a/c of J Mott sold for $425. Medium steers went between $350-$400, with 27 Angus/Hereford x on a/c of P West making $397 and 17 South Devon x on a/c H H Brown making $380. Weaner bulls sold for between $300-$350. Top weaner heifers made $320, these were 18 simmental x on a/c of J Journeaux. Medium heifers sold between $260-$300 with smaller heifers between $200$230. 20 South Devon x on a/c of H H Brown made $292. 31 Angus/Hereford x on a/c P West made $290. 30 Lim x on a/c A McGregor made $280. 24 Hereford on a/c of J Mott made $280. The next sale is at Highfields on a/c of David' Griffith on Thursday 11 April. Over 8,000 ewes will be yarded which makes it nearly as big as the last yarding at the Raetihi ewe fair.
