Brigade shenanigans for stress relief?

ByJulie Nation A regatta to rival the America's Cup was fought out on the murky waters of Ohakune's Lakes Reserve one recent weekend between rivals Ohakune and Raetihi Fire Brigades and Waimarino Police, much to the amusement of scores of onlookers and supporters. A number of homebuilt craft, some sporting highly original means of wind propulsion and assorted flotation devices, lined up for the start which was officiated by Ohakune Volunteer Fire Brigade's 'Commodore' Max Martin. The various yachts, rafts and pseudoamphibious sculp-

tures-of-dubious-artistic-merit followed a roughly oval course around the lake's edge, finishing (with luck!) at the launching area. Amid calls of police brutality by fellow competitors, and a barrage of flour bombs, water grenadcs and a host of other projectiles the police craft - aptly named 'The Submarine' - crossed the finish line first. The event is expected to be made a regular feature of the Ohakune Volunteer Fire Brigade's social calendar, with challenges issued and plans for next year's craft drawn up the same day.
