Historians meet for trip
Four members of the Waimarino Museum Society joined the Friend's of the Whanganui Society on a bus trip to the Taumarunui area on 17 March to look at places of historical interest. Shirley and Fred Bright, Ross Journeaux and Jack Sommerville started their visit at the new Department of Conservation Field Centre at Cherry Grove where they met the manager Steve
McGill. From there the group looked at Hatrick's upriver terminus which is nearby. They then travelled to Nukunuku where the group had lunch beside the river and visited Jack Erceg's private museum which had a large range of Maori artifacts. Barry Crocker took members over the Wanganui River in his jet boat to visit other places of interest. The
highlight of the trip for the four was the Nui Pole which is situated opposite the Aukopae landing. The 42 foot long Nui pole has a girth of 5 1 inches at ground level and is not completely round as it has 15 small flat faces along its length. The pole also has several interesting cross arms and was erected by the Hau Hau movement about 1865-1866.
