Rabbits could return to Waiouru tussock
BY DENNIS BEYTAGH When discussing the effectiveness of current noxious plant and animal control at last weeks meeting of the Ruapehu district Council in Taumaurunui, councillor Joe Murphy wamed that the day tus-
sock country around Waiouru could have a problem if "rabbits did what they usually do". Currently the policy of the Noxious Plant and Animal Control Board is to monitor and count the rabbits in the area so
that the most effective method of control - such as natural predators - can be ascertained. However councillor Murphy wamed that unless a campaign of killing rabbits was introduced in the near future that area would
again be over run as it was 70 years ago. When discussing possum control councillor Doug Bennett said he was well pleased with the measures taken so far. 'There are new ponga
and fem frond appearing on native bush in the Waimarino which had been attacked in previous years", he said. This success followed an aerial drop last year and will be followed up every year.
