wine team takes first The 'B' team of the Waimarino Wine Club upset the usual order of things when they won the bi-annual wine challenge between Waimarino and Taupo. The Spa Hotel in Taupo was the setting for the competition, on Sunday 24 February. The number two team was Audrey Pritt, Wendy Sutton, Adrienne Jensen and Phil Abel. Wairfiarino's first team was Dianne Pritt, Peter Sutton and Mark and Helen Hewett. Ray Thomas of T aupo presented a testing and tricky tasting with the wines selected showing true varietal character. Three whites and three reds were tasted. The first wine, a Corban's Stoneleigh Sauvignon Blanc 1990, put the Waimarino 2 ahead of their clubmates by one point. After the next two whites, Montana Marlborough Rhine Reisling and Kumeu River Chardonnay 1986 Waimarino 2 was still in the lead but Taupo had pushed into second place with Waimarino 1 trailing by five points. Waimarino 1 took deep breaths, drank lots of water and consoled themselves that reds were their strong point. Villa Maria Reserve Cabemet/Merlot 87 followed by Elderton Hermitage 85 finished off the tasting with the results: Waimarino 2, 66 points, Waimarino 1 65, Taupo 1 65. A taste-off was required to establish the winners of 'The Slab', the second prize, which Waimarino 1 took 14-8.
