Rates 'ripoff at Retaruke

A Retaruke property worth only $200 still has to be tagged with the Ruapehu District Council's Uniform Annual General Charge of $265. A Rotorua couple appeared on the Fair Go television programme last week complaining about the charge, saying they had already paid more thdn $1200 on the oneacre property that was given to them by the woman's father. The council has said there is one way around the charge and that is to lease the property to a neighbour which would mean the property was contiguous with a property already paying the UAGC,-but the couple said they could not do that because one neighbour was in receivership, one was the Department of Conservation and the third was on the other side of a river.
