Cattle yarding up in numbers

A total of 630 cattle at the Raetihi Sale on 28 February made it the best yarding of adult cattle for a number of years. There was widespread buying interest from Fielding to Te Kuiti with Polocrosse One Waimarino Polocrosse team entered the Roke Trophy A grade carnival at Otorohanga on the weekend. The weather did no favours and the play was in appalling, muddy conditions. yarding of mixed ages cows, run with bull, the top of which bought $535. As well as the cattle there was a yarding of 2,000 sheep, being mainly medium to small. Coopworth lambs sold on account of Nga Puke

Station went for $16.60 and a small number of woolley lambs went for $16.10. Six year old ewes sold for between $14.30 and $11.00. The next major sale is the weaner sale on 4 April.

Accountancy firm expands Raetihi based chartered accountants Peach Cornwall and Partners have expanded to include a branch in Wanganui. The firm has taken over the business of John May, who is to remain as a consultant. Bill Peach said the move would ensure the long term viability and continuity of the practice. He said the local Waimarino market for their business was limited. Bug may lead to more park hut wood burned The cost of servicing Tongariro National Park huts could go up if the presence of the parasite giardia increases in the park. Trampers have been warned to boil water to kill the cysts if present, which will lead to more firewood being used. The firewood is flown in to huts to avoid the use of nearby trees as firewood. Park staff may look at suitable water filters for the huts if the problem grows, said senior conservation officer Terry Slee. He said portable filters suitable for trampers are available.
