Hall project to lift morale
Plans are afoot to upgrade the National Park community hall, not only for the sake of users but also to provide a psychological boost to the town. Marshal Gebbie said last week that spirits in the town were low and
the National Park Progressive Association has become interested in carrying out work "which is visible and incorporates the efforts of the whole community so that they can achieve something visible and tangible". The group plans to spend $4355 on renovating the hall and have applied for a Hillary Commission grant for $3000 and hope to raise the rest, starting with a picnic day at Easter (see separate story). A recent working bee got the ball rolling and the grounds were cleaned up, broken window latches were fixed or replaced. An electricity card meter would be installed for easy power use and administration. Roof and spouting work as well as some structural work needs to be carried out and the interior and exterior paint is in need of attention. Also the water and sewerage should be connected to the town systems, said Mr Gebbie.
