Tax battle to go to appeal
Approval has been given for an appeal to be lodged in the High Court against a Taxation Review Authority decision not to allow deductions worth around $65,000 from the King Country Electric Power Board's first tax return. Treasurer Norm Annand told the February board meeting that when the board was brought into the tax regime in 1987 the KCEPB claimed accrued holiday pay and the total writeoff oF~ computer equipment as legitimate deductions. They were disallowed by the Inland Revenue
Department and subsequently appealed by the KCEPB. "This week we learnt that the appeal has failed," Mr Annand said. "Our taxation consultants still believe the deductions should have been allowed so I am seeking permission to lodge a further appeal to the High Court." The KCEPB's solicitors are involved in a number of appeals for other supply authorities on the same issue. The costs of the appeal are likely to be around $10,000, Mr Annand said.
