Ohakune street lights get chop

Some of Ohakune's present Clyde St - Burns St street lights are to go with the removal by the King Country Electric Power Board of a group of power poles. The Waimarino Community Board heard at their last meeting that the poles are to be removed and the cable put underground as part of the project to provide power to the Turoa Skifield. Council area manager Don Sattler agreed to negotiate with the power board to have the poles remain for the street lights at least in the interim. The proposed fiveyear upgrade of the Ohakune main street lighting, which was to start in the current year of work, is to be held over after the council found it may be eligible for a Transit New Zealand subsidy for safety related work. $20,000 per year was to be spent on the project, and the board recommended that the council budget for that amount, to be either the local share if a subsidy was forthcoming or for the first stage if it was not.
