Breastfeeding support group formed

A Waimarino breastfeeding mothers support group for mothers and mothers-to-be is being formed in Raetihi. Friendly and informal meetings to providing information and support on breastfeeding is the aim of the group being organised by Pauline Brennan who is a regis-

tered general obstetric nurse. Meetings will be held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month, except for school holidays. The first meeting is next week, Wednesday 20 February at 10am at the Community Health Rooms, 40 Queen St, Raetihi. Nurse Brennan said all are welcome and can contact her for further details, ph 54 364. "Breastfeeding is simple and natural, if you know how to do it," said Pauline. "But it takes information and encouragement and some motherly knowhow to breastfeed a baby as many of us discover with breastfeeding." "How often should you breastfeed? How long on each side? How do you know if baby is getting enough to eat? What other foods does he need? And what if he seems hungry again only an hour after he has been fed? - All are questions that crop up." "I feel the success in

breastfeeding a baby is having the right information and having another breastfeeding mother or mothers to tum to for advice and reassurance," she said. "I attended a breastfeeding support group in Pahiatua on the birth of our son and when we shifted here in May last year I attended the group in Waiouru. I have had enquiries from other mums interested, but Waiouru is too far for many to travel. "So I came up with the idea of a group for the Waimarino, with support from the Waiouru group leader Carolyn Smith. "I would ask anyone who is breastfeeding or pregnant and thinking of breastfeeding to keep our phone number handy, and get in contact if they would like some information or support. We are only too happy to give phone advice or home visit, recognising that many new mums fecl too tired to venture out to meetings," said Pauline.
