Raetihi racer report
Ex-Raetihi lad-made-good Russell McFadyen featured in his local paper, the Observer of Mackay, Queensland recently after he won the Mackay Superstreet speedway car racing title. He also won awards for the best presented car for Superstreet and the highest points scorer for "superstreet" and "supersedan" racing. He has been racing in his new home town for six years and according to his wife Raewyn, "racing is in his blood and once you've caught it you can't get out of it. If we could give up work and race full time I think we would." Raewyn co-pilots for Russell and the pair and their speedway Cortina, which they built about a year ago, had been tipped to win the title after previous triumphs. Russell would be remembered by locals here as a forestry worker for Ron Rider and bulldozer driver for the late Frank McDonnell. He and his Christchurch wife left for Australia in 1978. He works in the Okay Creek open cast coal mine as a dragline operator. 1960's information sought The Bulletin has had a request for information about Emma Climo who died on 5 February 1960 and was buried at Raurimu. Her brother from 25 Potter Avenue, Northcote, Auckland, asked us for information about a funeral notice that was published in the local paper of 7 February 1960. The Bulletin started in 1983, and we have bo back issues of the paper that predated the Bulletin, so if you can help Mr Climo perhaps you could write to him at the above address.
