Taking the plunge, early!
BYJULIE NATION The warm waters of the Powderkeg's heated pool is the venue for a once-weekly water-ba-bies gathering. What began as a holiday exercise for Ohakune teenager Angela Bron, 1 6, escalated to become a mother and daughter effort with Angela, mum Carol and between 6-8 - youngsters each Saturday morning. Carol, a full-time employee at Ruapehu College "waded in" to help Angela, a competent talented swimmer, cope with the one or two new pupils arriving at each week's lesson.
"Angela started taking just a couple of youngsters that she knew as something for her to do during the holidays," said Carol. "It's got to the stage where we haye a small waiting list." The lessons centre mainly around children aged 3 1/2-6, with a few two-year olds attending to gain water confidence. Children are taught basic skills, or more advanced techniques depending on the individual, one-on-one for a period of 20 minutes. Parents with enquiries may contact Carol by phoning 59232.
