Fire ban lifted in some places

The total fire ban imposed by the Department of Conservation within the Tongariro/Taupo Conservancy has been relaxed in south western areas, following the much damper conditions prevailing there. The ban on lighting fires in the open no longer applies to the DoC estate or land within one kilometre of the DoC estate contained within the boundaries, from south of a line between Manson' s Siding on State Highway Four and the junction of State Highway 47 and SH48. West of a line extending between Iwikau Village and Karioi, east of SH4 and north SH49 between the junction of SH4 and SH49 and Karioi. A department spokesperson said despite recent rainfalls vegetation conditions throughout the rest of the conservancy are still dry. The fire ban here will not be lifted until more substantial rain has fallen.
