Tramper dies on Ruapehu

Searchers recovered the body of a man lost on Mount Ruapehu at about 11.30am on Saturday, after the man was reported missing from Auckland on Thursday. Search and Rescue personnel spotted the body of Bruno Arlov, 43, a labourer, lying on snow on the westem side of Mt Ruapehu, at an altitude of 2176m, below Paretetaitonga saddle in the Mangatu ruturu Valley. He was less than a kilometre from the Mangaturuturu High Altitude Shelter. National Park Police Constable Steve Mastrovich said Mr Arlov's car had been found at the Whakapapa Carpark at about 3pm on Friday, after he had been reported missing following his absence from work in Auckland on Thursday. A helicopter search started at 5.30pm on Friday. Constable Mastrovich said there had been some confusion over Mr Arlov's itinerary when he was reported missing. He had been tramping alone and had gone up the mountain by chairlift on Monday but may have come down and gone up again on Tuesday, said Constable Mastrovich. Mr Arlov was clad lightly, was tramping alone and appeared to have succumbed to hypothermia. There were no visible signs of injury when his body was found.
