Student Board of Trustees member describes tasks
BY
NATALIE
TAYLOR
As a student representative, I go along to meetings to give an input of student opinions and ideas. I was elected back in February for a second term, as elections occur every year. This means that I can carry on with the work that I started with the Board last year. One of my tasks has
been the school charter, which defines the aims and principles of our school. This has just recently been amended by the Board and accepted by the Ministry of Education. Other projects that have arisen are the 'Development Plan" and "Policy Writing". The Development Plan is looking at major changes to the school Library, Laboratories A
and B, the Art room, theHistory and Geography class and our Technical 'areas. It is very ambitious work, but it is work that needs to be done. The Policy Writing, involves creating a new set of policies for the College, accepted by the Board. This will be a continuing project, new policies being added all the time.
As a note from the board, we will be working through the holidays in preparation for the new school year and to cope with the new responsibilities from the ministry. On financial matters, I am glad to say that the school is in a very good position and this is reflected in the resources that we have, such as our most
i BoT tasks
From page 5 recent purchase of an exEducation Department bus. The school buildings and grounds are looking great, as you can see for yourself. Personally, I have remained on the same subcommittees of Finance and Liaison (Community Relations). These I feel have covered the needs of the students and their interests and have given me the flexibility to juggle the demands of Board responsibilities and school work. I think that being on the Board gets better all the time. I have had to learn a lot and put in a lot of my spare time, but in the end it is worth it. A new learning experience for me was interviewing applicants for the Assistant Principal's position kfter the departure of Mr Brebner. This had to be one of the most daunting experiences that I have ever had - it was also the most difficult decision to make. As this will be my final term on the Board, I would like to say that the Board members are a fantastic team of people to know and work with. They are people who are willing to contribute their time and will, in any way possible, try to improve the school for the bencfit of everyone. So for any student who would like to stand for the election next year, I strongly encourage you to do so, because you will find people who are willing to make you feel J part of the Board and
who are open to our ideas. It is, however, a position that involves a lot of dedication and time commitment at meetings. To all those students who are leaving, I wish you the best for the future. I have enjoyed my time on the Board and have tricd to rcpresent the students of the College, to the best of my ability.
