Pet name explained

A number of people called the Bulletin about last week's photograph of the 'Rangataua Pet' giving explanations of its name. It seems 'Rangataua' is because it appears from many parts of the Waimarino to be hovering there, and 'Pet' comes from the fact that it stays close to the mountain. Daphne Workman told us it used to often have a tail that pointed towards the mountain and that when she was a child in Rangataua her parents called it the 'Rangataua Dog'. She said it was a sign of bad weather to cpme in those days too.
