Park busy
While Whakapapa Tongariro National Park staff have been overwhelmed at the response to their summer nature programme, Ohakune staff have faced steady but 'not huge' numbers. Conservation Officer Lisle Irwin said staff were reasonably happy with the way it had gone but that they had hoped for more. "It seems the downturn in the numbers of holiday makers hit us," said Mr Irwin. "But at least it has been steady and we've had pretty good weather." He said there had been some locals on trips, but not many. "It's good to see locals out on the trips and evening talks as they get involved in discussions and make things more interesting," he said. Many of the Whakapapa walks had been booked out over the period, especially the popuiar events like the Tongariro Crossing and ascents of Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe.
DoC launcned a heavier advertising campaign in the main centres this season which may have led to the high numbers. The Whakapapa programme runs until 26 January and the Ohakune programme finished on Sunday.
