Farmers urged to make tax claim
Farmers are being advised to lodge claims with thcir oil suppliers immediately in order to guarantee a refund of the excise tax on diesel. Federated Farmers Transport Officcr Nicky Jenkins says farmers who missed the early January dcadline for rcfunds may still be ablc to make a claim for the 11.2 ccnts pcr litre tax for any diesel supplics thcy hcld on-farm as at 1 January . "The government abolished ihe tax from the first of January and the Customs Department agreed that supplics hcld at that date could bc verificd and qualify for a rebate of the tax alrcady paid." Ms Jenkins said the offcr by oil companics to process refunds amounts to a massivc undertaking on their part and the early dcadline they set for doing so was an effort to encouragc farmers to put claims in promptly. "However it is up to oil companies to decide whcther to accept claims lodgcd after 8 January and even if late claims are accepted, payment could be dclayed for some weeks due to accounting requirements."
