King Country consumers have enjoyed power prices bclow the national average since the early 1970s. A rcport on long term electric price trends was tabled at the December KCEPB meeting as a "valcdictory for previous board members as a record or their achicvement", general manager Petcr Till said. The most significant factor in the board's history was the
commissioning of the Kuratau Power Station in 1962 which resulted in a steady decrease in the price of electricity over a five ycar pcriod from 29c to 17c pcr kilowatt hour. From a peak of more than 45c at start-up in 1947, the board has droppcd its unit cost to an average of just over seven cents, while the national average has gone from bctwecn 24c pcr unit to 10c in the same timc.
