Mechanic takes over
There have been changes out the back at Ohakune Tyres and Energy Centre but many people would not have noticed yet. Mechanic Garry Tansley has become the proprietor of the workshop business attached to the scrvice station. He is calling his new business Ohakune Autos and it will initially be offering as good a service as before, because Garry was running the workshop on contract for Warren Swain. But Garry says the service will soon get better with his plans for the development of the business. He has already employed another mechanic, Dave Mcllroy, who retums to the workshop where he completed his apprenticeship when it was Reynolds Ford. Ohakune Autos is offering a complete and comprehensive range of automotive services from lubrication service to full mechanical re-
pairs on machinery from weedeaters to earthmoving scrapers and 1930s Model A Fords to 1991 Mitsubishi V3000s. Garry has been in Ohakune since 1981 when he was working part time for Jim Goldfinch at Cedar. "I used to look across the road at this workshop and think 'that's the workshop I want' and now I'm here," said Garry. He said his plans for the future of the workshop involve updating much of the equipment to bring the service into the 1990s. "Having worked here for a while now I know the things the place needs and that's what I'll be building up." The business already provides a wide range of automotive services which Garry plans to expand on. Now they offer full servicing of vehicles including lubrication and tune-ups; full mechanical repairs including engine work, gearbox, clutch, differential; electrical
repairs (virtually anything says Garry); Warrant of Fitness checks; Automobile Association call-outs; 24-hour callout services; windscreen replacements; wheel alignments. Also, the full tyre service is still available through Ohakune Tyres and Energy. "Nothing is too much hassle," he said. Garry began his automotive career at Nissan in Rotorua where he completed his apprenticeship. He was involved in rallying there for four ycars, working on a team for three New Zealand "Heatway" car rallies. Between then and coming to Ohakune he has worked as a mechanic for Pine Milling in Rotorua, Mills Construction also Rotorua, Ward Hill Ltd, and at Nissan BMW in Brisbane Australia. He also worked for a time in Papua New Guinea for a milling company and in Bouganville for a Detroit Diesel agency.
