Crater Lake walk popular

The chair lift rides and guided walks to the Crater Lake on Mt. Ruapehu have proved very popular this year despite the weather. While it has been fine most days, high winds have curtailed the guided walks more than normal. On fine days up to 600 people have been visiting Whakapapa to ride the chairlifts and enjoy the views. The remaining snow cover from the 1990 ski season means families can play in the snow only fifteen minutes walk from the top of the chairlifts. Participants on the guided Crater Lake walks are also enjoying the snow, sliding most of the way back down the mountain almost to the top of the lifts. Up to 70 people a day have been taking advantage of the chairlifts to walk to the Crater Lake. Whakapapa will continue their summer operation until 3 February 1991.
