$3.8million to be poured into tunnel
Tongariro Hydro Schcmc's Whakapapa intake and the Tawhitikuri Tunnel are to have $3.8 million spent on them. About $2.1 million will be spent on the Whakapapa intake, modifying the structure to minimise the amount of gravel and sediment entcring the tunnel from the Whakapapa River. Most of this work will probably be undertaken with the intake in use, while the next stage of the work, relining a three kilometre section of the Tawhitikuri Tunnel, will mean the intake is shut down, from 4 March until 7 April. The tunnel work involves replacing concrete worn away during the 15 years the tunnel has been in use. Engineers say they are working on the worst section of the tunnel first and may evcntually do more. The tunnel was recently shut down for a long period when a hole was discovered in the tunnel floor with a large cavity washcd out of the surrounding earth.
