Land valuations lead to council problems

Problems face the Ruapehu District Council following the review of the district's property valuations, said Mayor Garrick Workman, and the council may have to look at extending a differential rating system. Land values, on which rates are based, fell 27 per cent in Ohakune and 14 per cent in Raetihi, and capital values fell eight and 10 per cent respectively. Mayor Workman said the valuations were not surprising but that they would make the setting of rates even more difficult than they had already been. He said as urban values dropped it put more rating pressure on those in the rural areas. He said it was his personal view that the council would have to look harder at differential rating to avoid problems for rural ratepayers or look to capital value rating. "The rural area wasn't given the relicf in valuations we had hoped for," said Mayor Workman. He said people have the opportunity to object to their valuations, if they are "out of kilter". '
