Squash club needs members
The Waimarino Squash Club held their 1990 annual general meeting at the club recently. President Marty McGrath presented his report expressing concern at the lack of membership in the club over the last three years. The lack of membership has meant the club has had to disaffiliate with both Central Districts and the New Zealand Squash Rackets Association. This means that the club members can no longer be graded or compete in inter-club competitions. It also means players entering tournaments can not put in result cards for grading purposes. However this appears to have little bearing on the number of members or outsiders entering tournaments. The main reason, felt by those present at the meeting for the lack 6f membership was a general fall in interest, common to a lot of sporting organisations. About five years ago the club had a healthy 140
members. Now there are around 80. The club, now going through a rebuilding phase, looks to be heading for a more successful year with a large committee of twenty members. The club is holding a very successful and well supported housie night every Thursday to raise funds to help pay off a nearfinished mortgage. By 1991 the club hopes to be able to re-affiliate with NZSRA. The 1991 Squash Club Committee stands at; President, Marty McGrath; Treasurer, Grant Pope; Auditor, Erin Ikin; Secretary, Lesley Todd; Men's Club Captain Hemi Biddle; Ladies Club Captain Donna McGrath. Committee members; Ross Gillett, Melanie Anderson, Ken Summerhays, Peter Anderson, Craig Wiggins, Pearl Brown, Jo Parkinson, Rhona Te Huia, John Laurenson, Shelly Brown, Christine Hawira, Bill Scobie, Aroha Irwin, Graham Irwin.
