The ideas of Junior Council members encouraging their peers to wear safety helmets while cycling was of major interest at the final Ruapehu South Junior Council meeting for 1990. The meeting, held on Monday 3 December, repeated the concern of the District Council at the numbers of children not wearing protective helmets. Councillor Gould, who represented the District Council and the primary school at the meeting, suggested the Junior Council play the lead within schools and make it clear that they are in support of cycle helmets. Other points of discussion at the meeting included the placement
of glass recycling bins around Ohakune. Councillor Gould reported that the District Council were thinking of asking the Junior Council about plastic milk container recycling. Chairman Che Wilson brought the topic of Giardia in the Ohakune water supply to discussion. Councillor Gould said the the Ohakune Primary School had already fitted filters to their drinking fountains and the college has been considering them. The meeting concluded with the mayor Garrick Workman and Junior Council Chairman, Che Wilson, wishing the Junior Council a merry Christmas and good luck for their future.
