Family support meeting in Raetihi

A public meeting on the formation of a family support service is to be held in Raetihi tomorrow. Homebuilders Wanganui is the parent organisation for the service, which is an organisation under contract to the Department of Social Welfare. the group has nothing to do with hammer and nails, but aims to provide "an intensive short term, home based family support service for families in crisis". The organisation is made up of a management committee consisting of two representatives each from Parentline, the Whanganui River Maori Trust Board and the Onesimus Trust. The committee employs two co-ordinators (Maori and Pakeha) and the family support workers, who work with the client families. The idea is to "promote the ability of family/ whanau and extended family/hapu groups to provide for the care, protection and belonging of their children and young people". Support services are supplied to families under stress and to those families with a child at risk of being taken into care.
