A first for Ohakune Bowlers

History was made recently when a triumphant Ohakune women's bowls team brought home the prestigious Westaway Cup from regional competition - a first for the club. Fourteen teams from the Wanganui region travelled to Waverley to contest the cup, playing five matches of 70 minutes duration. The Ohakune team of Audrey Nation (skip), Betty Hammond (3), Rita Kaiwhare (2) and Christina Kaiwhare (lead) fought strong competition, finishing with four convincing wins and a narrow loss. Ohakune won the competition after a countback of ends, due to three teams finishing with four wins apiece. Team members were "thrilled to bits" to win the cup after finishing runners-up in previous years. Ohakune received rousing support from other rural clubs including Taihape, Hunterville and Raetihi. A maximum number of 16 teams will challenge the club, in Ohakune, next November.
