Sports and recreation fund surplus

A drop in the number of applications for this year's Local Recreation and Sports Scheme fund has left the Ruapehu District Council with a surplus of nearly $3,500. Twenty-four clubs and organisations from around the Ruapehu region submitted applciations for a share of the $19,000 made available for allocation. Councillors agreed that re-advertising for further applications would not be worthwhile, as would re-dis-tributing the sum amongst existing applicants. It was decided that surplus funding should be held over until next year's round of applications. Waiouru board representative Bob Vine expressed his disappointment at not receiving notice prior to the meeting of the Local Recreation and Sports Scheme assessment committee-, as Waiouru was poorly represented among the applicants. He cited delays with courier deliveries and inadequate circulation of community newspapers bearing notice of pending meetings, within Waiouru.
