King Country Art prize to Auckland
Auckland artist Kar! Maughan walked away with the major honour at the Central King Country Visual Arts Trust awards announced in Taumaranui ori Saturday. His w o r k "Cornflowers" won the $5000 National Mutual Award in the open section for a painting of a New Zealand subject with an accent on landscape or environment. Judges Murray and John Gow, also of Auckland, described Maughan's work as technically one of the best they had seen. Of special interest was the heavy image of paint used which made the
painting exceptional, they said. The Taumaranui Winter Show Trust $5000 award for a paining of a King country subject with an accent upon landscape or environment went to Riverhead artist Mark Cross with his "Communique" image of the Desert Road. Other award winners were Richard Crisp of Coromandel who won the $100 Michael Mattar Award for "Winter Landscape - Taumaranui: and Taumaranui artist Kathleen Wallis who won the King Country Artists Award with "Up on the Kururau". Taupo's Val Raymond won the $1000 Wickham award for a painting of distinction with her watercolour "Spring Skiing Te Heu Heu Valley Whakapapa". In the photography section of the awards, Upper Hutt photographer Syd Moore took out the Sir John Logan Campbell $1000 award with "In Memorian" described by Judge Geoff
Mason as having simplicity, impact, a strong message and providing him with strong emotions. The $1000 Clayton and Hayes Pharmacy award for a picture of a King Country setting, went to Norm Judd of Auckland with "Wetland Winter - Turoa". Gisborne's Kerry Fox won the Taumaranui and district promotion and Development association $500 award with "Swirling Mist" while Richard Cowan of Upper Hutt won the $500 June Corbett award with "Karapoti Classic Mountain Bike Race". A popular winner in the King Country Photographers award was Taumaranui historian Ron Cooke's "whimsical", according to Mason, work "when Taumaranui Water is Good". This year's awards attracted 261 paintings and 191 photographs with 2150 paintings and 50 pictures eliminated. the rest are on show at the Taumaranui War Memorial Hall until Sunday.'
