Ngamatea School moves into classrooms
Recent building renovations, long overdue for Ngamatea School, have placed the school firmly in the 1990's according to its
Board of Trustees, Board chairman, Tom Kennedy, said the four year push for the school's new classroom block was a lengthy but
worthwhile process, with the end result being a brand new block housing the schools' 15 pupils and one teacher in roomy comfort. the
block meets all Education Board specifications, with a disabled persons toilet and wheelchair access entry ramp. It replaces a
pre-fab, sited in 1968. Re-modelling of an original block of the school - built in 1919 - is expected to be completed in time for
Ngamatea's 75th jubilee reunion in early December. total cost of the project is estimated at around $128, 000. Sole teacher Sherryl Allen is delighted with the new facilities after working for the past three months in cramped conditions in the old block while workmen completed the new
classroom. Mrs Allen commended the rural community who rallied around to tidy up the building site and replant the gardens. "There's a marvellous community spirit that exists," she said. "Even some people who have no children at the school pitched in and helped".
