Busy Labour Weekend for rescuers

A 35 YEAR-OLD man was rescued from the Ruapehu Crater Lake area on Saturday of Labour Weekend after he suffered a mild heart attack. The man had hiked to the crater from the Whakapapa Skifield. A Department of Conservation staff member and a Ruapehu Alpine Lifts ski patroller were taken towards the site by snowcat but snow conditions stopped its" progress. The Waimarino Rescue Helicopter was called to fly two rescuers to the woman, who stretchered her off the accident site. She was flown by helicopter to Taumarunui Hospital. Also at Labour Weekend DoC staff were alerted to two possible missing climbers. One overdue climber had left the mountain on

time but had failed to notify his contact. A couple who were due out from a climbing expedition on Monday walked out on Tuesday morning after deciding to seek shelter in bad weather. The Waimarino Rescue Helicopter was

called to an accident in Valley Road, Raetihi where a woman was injured in a riding accident. She had fallen from and then been kicked by her horse. While she was flown to Wanganui Base Hospital a second Wanganui Aero Works helicopter

was used to fly to the scene of a head-on car accident at the deviation near Taihape where eight people were injured. One patient was flown to Wanganui Base Hospital and a second flown there by the Waimarino Rescue Helicopter.
