Fire season approaches

On average 780 rural fires are started each year either by accident or arson and with the advent of summer the danger of fire increases. Commonly called "the fire season", it brings a very real threat of total destruction to our forests and parks. The T ong ariro/T aupo Department o f Conservation and New Zealand Forest Managers are reminding members of the public that a Restricted Fire Season operates 365 days a year in and within one kilometre of all lands that are administered by these agencies.

Anyone wishing to have a fire or needing further information on fire permits should contact their nearest Department of Conservation office in Turangi,

Taupo, Whakapapa or Ohakune where permits are available." Informative pamphlets on bush fires and fire permits are also available at these offices.
