Library funds share vital
It is vital that libraries receive their rightful share of public funding, says the New Zealand Library Association. Public libraries are finding it increasingly difficult to meet the demands put on them by their communities, says the association. They cite the recent
Hillary Commis'sion "Life in New Zealand" survey which shows reading as top of the list for leisure activities for women in their 40s and 60s and second for men in their 40s and 60s and women in their 20s. "The spending of public money in this area contributes to the health and well being of the nation, both so-
cially and economically and provides excellent value for money," says NZLA. "One good book may be borrowed 30 to 50 times before being withdrawn from library shelves." New Zealand also has
an aging population and it is of great importance to provide free and equitable access to books since reading has so clearly been indicated as a favourite pastime for this age group, says NZLA.
