And yet more snow...

Ruapehu spring skiing looks set to be just like the good old days this year, though the weekend's skiing was more than a little wintery. Cold conditions did not deter skiers from enjoying great skiing on the mountain on Sunday and the low temperatures meant Turoa's 10cm of snow from Saturday night stayed light and dry. Turoa's T bars were closed Saturday with poor visibility though the rest of the field was open. Whakapapa's facilities were all operating on both days and marketing manager Scott Lee said the snow base is now three times that of last year. They had about 4000 people on the mountain on Saturday in windy and cloudy conditions and about 5000 people on Sunday, in improved conditions. Yesterday Whakapapa was open with all facilities operating and Turoa opened after winds dropped. Early in the day Turoa's temperature was minus nine degrees with 30-35 knot winds, but these winds had decreased by mid morning.
