Street lighting not dangerous enough
Sub-standard lighting along Ohakune's Clyde Street is causing concern for the Waimarino Community Board. The matter was raised by the former Ohakune Borough Council in 1986 with the outcome of a survey indicating the need to upgrade existing fluorescent lighting to 90 watt sodium lamps. The matter was referred to Transit New Zealand who were unable to provide finance for the project due to "severe financial constraints." Chairman Colin Webb informed the Board that Transit New Zealand's present financial posi-
tion is no different. Transit NZ advised that the presence of a night time accident problem would help to gain support for a lighting upgrade. Three accidents have occured on Clyde Street between 1985-1990, which Transit NZ says is not enough evidence to support the case. Mr Webb said the council should start immediately by building a case to have the job done, saying the bulk of funding should be by Transit NZ because of Clyde Street's main highway status. He called for a report by Ruapehu District Council's technical services division to be tabled at next month's meeting.
