Council appoints community college rep
The Waimarino and Waiouru areas have in the past (prior to amalgamation) been eligible to appoint a representative to the Council of the Wanganui Regional Community College. That appointment was made by the Waimarino District Council and the current appointee is Mr Andrew Cornwall, a chartered accountant of Raetihi. Amending legislation is currently before Parliament providing for new College Councils and will take effect from 1 January 1991. Under the proposed composition of the new College Council the Ruapehu District Council will be entitled to appoint one member. The Wanganui Community College Council advises that, whilst it would expect that the representative would be primarily concerned with the Waimarino and Waiouru ares, he/she would also have a more general brief to represent the interests of the Ruapehu District as a whole. Mr Andrew Cornwall has indicated his willingness to carry on as the Ruapehu District Council's appointee and the resolution to retain his services was adopted. However, it was felt that further investigations should be carried out to discover the relationship between the northern sector of the Ruapehu District (particularly Taumarunui) and the two regional colleges in that area, the Taranaki Polytechnic in New Plymouth and the Waikato Institute of Technology in Hamilton. Councillors said that many people from Taumarunui and the northern sector of the district, attended courses in both the T aranaki Polytechnic and the Waikato Institute of Technology.
