Vegymski gearing up

Turoa Tumblers gymnastics club organisers are gearing up for their ultimate Vegymski event, to be held 22/23 September. The veterans' tournament is the only one held in the Southern Hemisphere and this year, the tenth held, is to be the last, at least for the near future. Senior Coach Glyn Hubbard said there were a number of reasons for the end of the event, but he hopes another club will take it on. The idea of Vegymski is a fun event for gymnasts and veteran gymnasts to wind down after the end of the season.

The Ohakune event was started to promote the sport and the community. It includes gymnastics and skiing and carrots feature in the programme in recongnition of the community's market gardening aspect. It has become increasingly popular over the years and now draws some of the finest New Zealand gymnasts. This year four Commonwealth Games competitors will visit including Haley Sligo, Craig Bruce, Mark Lister and David Lutterman (New Zealand's gymnast of the year). Skiing will take place

on the best of the two days, the gymnastics fitting in around the weather. Saturday night sees participants meet for a meal with nightlife activities following. They will be staying in all sorts of accommodation including shearer's quarters, and Mr Hubbard said the club may be asking for help from the community with billeting.
