Underground policy

Replacement power lines won't necessarily be undergrounded in the King Country Electric Power Board's area in spite of a request from the Ruapehu District Council that such a policy be considered. The council had written to the board saying it is aware that some pole renewal work is being proposed for Owhango and suggesting the board adopt an undergrounding policy. However, KCEPB General Manager Peter Till said a survey of board customers has shown 90% are not in

favour of paying extra to have lines undergrounded. This means undergrounding will only take place if: 1. The user pays for it, as in new subdivisions where council by-laws require it. 2. It is difficult to find a safe, convenient access for overhead wire in densely utilised main streets. 3. Undergrounding can be done more cheaply than overhead lines, eg with cost sharing, the environment is more difficult for overhead, or there is a tree problem.
