Liftie injured

luroa ski lirt operator Craig Spittal, 20, from Palmerston North was progressing favourably in Waikato hospital after suffering two crushed legs in an accident while working on one of the Wintergarden platter lifts at about 4.45pm on Monday. Both legs were crushed below the knee when they were caught between the lift cable and bull wheel. He had been carrying out routine maintenance on the lift. Labour Department and Ministry of Trans-

port Marine Division inspectors are investigating the incident and Turoa management staff have said they will wait for the results of that investigation before commenting. Mr Spittal was rescued from the lift machinery by members of the public and Turoa Ski Patrol Staff , and a ski patrol doctor and patrollers treated him at the site. He was taken off the mountain by rescue toboggan, then by ambulance to Erua, then to Hamilton by helicopter.
