No lights subsidy

The Waimarino Community Board last week decided to withdraw subsidies of under verandah lighting used by some Ohakune retailers. The Board made its decision after it was recommended by the King Country Electric Power Board that street lighting hours be extended, operating on a dusk to dawn basis. Committee members agreed that it would be appropriate to withdraw support for under verandah lighting in the

business area which will become adequately lit by existing street lights. Only about half of Ohakune's retail population use extra lighting, in most instances as security lighting. Retailers can elect to continue with under verandah lighting once the subsidy is removed or else have it disconnected. The King Country Electric Power Board will be replacing around 25 lights around town over a five year period, as these lights are not

the standard 80 watt Mercury Vapour street lights used elsewhere.
