Traffic hazards

The invitation for Mr King of the MOT to address the Waiouru Lions Club was confirmed at Tuesday's Waiouru Community Board meeting. The September meeting, which is open to Community Board members and the public, is to discuss traffic conditions in Waiouru, especially on the main road. There was some discussion on Tuesday night about the merits of extending the 70km zone by moving the sign several hundred metres north up the main road. Although this suggestion was considered "stupid" by one board member, most of the others considered that it would give more warning to motorists that a residential area was immediately around

the corner. Community Board member Murray Fitchett noted that there seems to be some confusion about rubbish collection days on the part of people in the Defence Housing area. Monday is the collection day for Waiouru township. That is, the rateable area around the main road. The ever-present truck parking problem was graphically illustrated by a local resident who lives next to one of the hazardous parking areas. He describes the problem as "potential accident material all the time" and as a total shambles", especially in the BP Station and Scotties cafe area. With trucks parking in this area all night cars have difficulty in approaching the commercial area and parking safely.
