Van tumbles off Paraparas
Three Wanganui men were taken to Wanganui Base Hospital on Wednesday night after their CF Bedford van left the road 11 kilometres down the Parapara Highway. The alarm was raised at about 9.40pm after
one of the occupants of the van made his way to the road. The Raetihi Volunteer Fire Brigade, the Ohakune Volunteer Firebrigade, ambulance, a Ministry of Transport officer, Police and the Waimarino Rescue Trust Helicopter attended the accident.
Police said the vehicle was travelling at about lOOkm/h when it failed to take a comer and left the road, travelling about 10 metres in the air before hitting the ground. It then rolled about 50 metres down the 60 degree slope to come to rest on its roof. One of the occupants was thrown clear, and suffered hip injuries and another, who managed to make his way to the road to get help, suffered a broken arm. The third man was trapped in the vehicle by his feet. Ohakune Volunteer Firebrigade Jaws of Life equipment was used to extricate the man, who suffered facial, abdominal and foot injuries. Rescuers took about 90 minutes to get the man out of the van and up to the road, using ropes. The names of the accident victims were not released at the time of going to press.
