Warrant issued for ski fraud
The following cases were heard in the Ohakune District Court yesterday. Sergeant Russell England of Ohakune appeared for the Police Prosecution and Traffic Sergeant Buck Buchanan of Taumarunui appeared for the Ministry of Transport. Attempt to defraud Keren Elizabeth Earp, 23, travel consultant of New Plymouth was to have faced two charges of attempting to defraud the Turoa Skifield by misuse of a mid-week ski pass so as to obtain some benefit for herself to which she was not entitled. Following her nonappearance in court a warrant for arrest was issued. No log books Joseph Powell Adam, 35, farmer of Wanganui,
faced a charge of failing to produce a log book while driving a heavy motor vehicle between his two farming properties in the Waimarino and the Parapara Road. However, when defendant produced evidence from local stationers that log books were unavailable for purchase during the period concerned (and this was confirmed by the MOT), he was ordered to pay only court costs of $65. Insecure load John Angus Finlayson, 51, farmer of Pio Pio faced a charge of driving a heavy motor vehicle on SH49 on 11 April. Defendant accepts the prosecution case but reauested the trial be
transferred to the Te Kuiti District Court to be heard on 18 September. This was agreed to by consent. Diversion Jason Lee Haitana, 18, butcher of Ohakune, was further remanded to appear in the Ohakune District Court on 30 August on a charge of assaulting Anthony Frew on 15 March. Court heard that the case was being resolved by way of diversion and when defendant has completed this sentence, the charge will be dismissed. Remanded David Walter Hiroti, 38, labourer of Raetihi, pleaded guilty to a charge of driving with excess blood alcohol in Jellicoe Street, Te Puke and to not having a current driving licence. He was remanded on bail to appear in the Ohakune District Court on 30 August for a presentence report and sentence. Charge Dismissed Justin Edward King, 17, student of Ohakune, had the charge of possessing a pipe for the smoking of cannabis dismissed when the police prosecution reported that the case had been dealt with by way of diversion and defendant had completed this sentence. Failed to stop Peter Sydney Low, 22, tree planter of Pipiriki pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to stop when requested by a traffic officer in Ohakune on 17 May. The defendant's car had been caught by a Hawk radar detector at a speed in excess of the 50km/h limit which applied, and when the traffic officer stepped out to stop the driver, he had ignored the signal. Defendant offered no explanation for failing to stop. He was convicted and disqualified from driving for three months.
Receiving Riki Martin Surton, 29, unemployed of Ohakune, pleaded guilty to a charge of receiving. Court heard how defendant had helped another offender recover property which he (the co-offender) had earlier stolen and dumped on the night of 10-11 July. He was convicted and remanded on bail to ap-
pear in the Ohakune District Court on 30 August for a pre-sen-tence report and sentence. Counsel: Paul Brown. Not guilty pleas Thomas Francis Treanor, 26, unemployed of Pipiriki, pleaded not guilty to two charges of wilful trespass. He was remanded to appear in the Ohakune District Court on 28 September for a defended hearing.
