Generators bought

Three large diesel generators will be bought by the King Country Electric Power Board if negotiations with the Ohakune owner are successful. General Manager Peter Till told a special board meeting in Taumarunui that the generators were originally used to provide back-up to the NZ Army's communications system in Waiouru and could provide enough power, with the Piriaka Power Station, to almost meet Taumarunui's total electricity needs on a warm summer's day.

The generators would be best used in winter, however, to save the board paying peak power charges. One of the units may be trailer mounted to provide power for areas where power cuts were planned, or to provide security of supply for customers such as the hospital or skifields. Housing the units or building a trailer for them could cost up to $100,000, but this could be paid for in peak power charge savings over a two year period.
